"Born in Kerry, raised in Westmeath and educated in Dublin, Ada English qualified as a doctor and immersed herself in the Gaelic Revival and nationalist politics, joining the Gaelic League, Sinn Féin, and Cumann na mBan, while also serving as medical officer to the Irish Volunteers. A friend of Pastrick Pearse, Thomas MacDonagh, Arthur Griffith, Liam Mellows, and Eamon de Valera, her activism intensified during the War of Independence and in 1921 she spent 6 months in Galway jail for possession of nationalist literature. She was elected to the second Dail, rejected the Anglo-Irish Treaty and when the Civil War broke out she reputedly joined Cathal Brugha in his occupation of the Hammam Hotel on O'Connell Street.
