Becoming a member:
Membership of the library service is free to all. You can join online or at any branch of the library by presenting proof of your name and current address.
There is no minimum age for joining, but those under the age of 18 years require a signature from their parent or guardian.
Children and young people under the age of eighteen years must get the permission of a parent or guardian to join the library. Parents/guardians are responsible for their children in the library, their children’s selections and use of library materials and services, including access to the Internet.
You will need to renew your membership annually. Please call into your local library to do so, with your library card. If you have changed address in the meantime, you will also need to provide proof of your new address.
Your Library Account:
Your library membership gives you access to an online library account. To access your account you will need to enter your name, library card barcode and your PIN.
To get your PIN number, present your library card at any branch. It is important that you attend in person so that your identity can be verified.
You can opt to receive library notifications by email and/or sms by providing your email address and/or mobile number.
Cork City Libraries also sends print notifications to borrowers who have not yet opted for email and/or sms notification methods.
Register online:
You may join the library online by clicking on the button below after you have read and accepted the membership conditions. You must be over 18 to join online.
You then have one month to visit your chosen local library branch, bringing proof of address, to get your library card and fully activate your library membership.
You can only reserve ONE item when joining online. Once you receive your library card, you will be entitled to reserve a maximum of twelve items at any one time.
Online services:
There is a range of online services available to all library members across the country and some extra options for those who are members of Cork City Libraries. See here for details.
Conditions of membership:
To borrow items, you must have your membership card.
Those under the age of 18 MUST get a parent/guardian to sign the registration form at the library branch.
Parents/Guardians are responsible for their children's selections and library materials and services, including use of the library and access to the Internet.
If you have a PIN number to access your online account, please do NOT share this with anyone else.
You may borrow up to twelve items at one time, which are issued for a loan period of three weeks. An item may not be renewed more than five times and any items requested by another borrower may not be renewed. You can renew items online, in person or over the phone.
Items can be returned at any Cork City Libraries branch or at any public library across the country if you have chosen to join Libraries Ireland, in addition to joining Cork City Libraries.
There are no charges for overdue items, but borrowers will receive notifications when their items are overdue. Please keep in mind that other borrowers may be waiting on an item which is overdue.
All lost adult items will incur a replacement charge. Excessive charges may mean that a block will be put on your account and you will not be able to use your card to take items out or enjoy our online services until the issue(s) have been resolved.
You can place your own reservations for most items via the public access catalogues at our branches or through the Library Service online catalogue.
Borrowers should notify the library in the event of any change in their membership details, especially if they have lost their library membership card.
Please report lost cards to the library immediately. You may be held responsible for any items borrowed before the loss is reported.
Please observe Cork City Council's Code of Conduct when using the library and obey the lawful instructions of library staff.
Please also comply with the conditions of the Copyright And Related Rights Act 2000, when copying library material.
These terms and conditions will also apply to those using Cork City Libraries services who are also members of a library authority participating in the national shared library management system.
Membership details are confidential and will not be disclosed to other parties.
